Season 4, Episode 2
In North America, few people set out to work in logistics or transportation; most stumble into it by chance. This was certainly the case for Matthew Zarzycki. After earning a political science degree with aspirations for a career in foreign affairs, he soon realized that the government sector, with its rigid rules and bureaucratic complexities, was not for him.
Discovering Logistics Through a Mentor
A mentor suggested Matthew try logistics, comparing it to foreign affairs due to the global exposure and diverse interactions it offers. Skeptical but curious, he accepted a position with Fluor, an American company known for constructing military bases and infrastructure. His role involved a project in Afghanistan, where he spent a year immersing himself in the intricacies of logistics.
Gaining Experience in the Industry
Returning to Canada, Matthew expected his newfound experience to open doors. However, it took a year of searching before he joined Bison Transport, one of Canada’s top trucking companies. His six years there deepened his understanding of the logistics and transportation industry. Later, he explored international freight forwarding but quickly realized that he thrived in the fast-paced environment of domestic logistics.
Finding His Niche at Amplify
Now at Amplify, Matthew focuses on simplifying and enhancing cold chain logistics. His company operates two distinct branches: Amplify Logistics handles 3PL and warehousing, while Cargo County manages a fleet of over 200 trucks and 300 trailers, offering a white-glove service. Their specialization in the food industry and substantial triaxial fleet set them apart in the Canadian market.
Embracing Technology in Logistics
The logistics industry has transformed significantly, especially with the advent of AI and machine learning. These technologies are reshaping driver-dispatcher relationships, enhancing safety, and improving efficiency. However, they also raise concerns about data privacy and the potential misuse of information. The balance lies in using AI as a tool to support, not replace, human interaction.
Focusing on Sustainability
Sustainability is another critical focus. At Amplify, Matthew and his team are transitioning their trailer fleet to hybrid models to reduce diesel consumption and carbon emissions. Additionally, they prioritize reducing food waste by donating rejected shipments rather than discarding them.
Recruiting and Retaining Talent
Recruiting and retaining talent in logistics is challenging. Amplify’s hiring process emphasizes cultural fit and traits over experience, involving multiple interviews to ensure a good match. They also strive to engage and appreciate their employees through personalized recognition and support.
Staying Adaptable in a Changing Industry
In an industry that is continually evolving, staying adaptable and forward-thinking is essential. At Amplify, Matthew and his team embrace change, leveraging technology and fostering a dynamic team environment to remain at the forefront of logistics innovation.
